Riders Snake Up Out of the Fog at Mt. Tamalpais

Dudley Perkins H-D has revived its Three Mountain Run. About 60 people showed up Sunday Aug. 26 to ride the Bay Area backroads to the three highest peaks: Tamalpais, Diablo and Hamilton. I'll post individual photos in the photo store tomorrow.

Hundreds if bikers showed up today to ride from San Jose to Hollister for the 7th Annual run. I'll post more pictures on the blog later today. I got pictures of almost everybody who rode today. Some of you were going just too damn fast to get in the picture, plus my timing isn't as good as it used to be. But I got most of you. Santa Clara Valley Peace Officers Memorial Run

This Saturday, the 19th, I'll be shooting this exciting run that is now in its 7th year. About 1,000 bikes showed up last year. This run draws all types of bikers riding just about everything imaginable. Of course, there's always lots of Harleys. The weather will be excellent this weekend, so a similar turnout is expected. After a service in San Jose memorializing the Santa Clara County motor police who have died in the line of service, the run will take off about 10 a.m. for Bolado Park in Hollister for a big party and barbecue. Police escort the whole way so it's a real blast.

Look for my sign, taped to the windshield of my bike, parked somewhere along the route, and smile. I'll try to have some pictures up on the blog tomorrow night and all of them in my store by Sunday.

Legend of the Motorcycle at Half Moon Bay

The Second Annual Legend of the Motorcyle was bigger and better this year -- more bikes and more people. More than 300 antique and special interest motorcylces were on display along with artwork. Starting with a 1898 Werner one-cylinder and ending with 2007 turbo-charged and and electric-powered bikes, there was something here that represented the art of the motorcycle for more than 100 years. Ace Cafe London's Ride with the Rockers participants approach Half Moon Bay on the way to Saturday's Second Annual Legends of the Motorcycle event at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Classic bike fans were pouring into the Ritz in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Friday evening for what is quickly becoming recognized as a premiere world event for vintage and other collectable motorcycles. The riders above made a two-day trip from LA on vintage bikes to commemorate the event. The Ace Cafe is legendary for being one of the centers of cafe racing and, of course, a hangout for the Mods and Rockers of British bike fame.

I will be taking pictures at the event and post them tomorrow night.

Ride with the Rockers update

Weather permitting, I plan to shoot pix of the riders in the Ride With the Rockers run which will approach Half Moon Bay this evening. Sponsored by the famous Ace Cafe London, the run left LA on Thursday, partied in San Luis Obispo last night and will arrive today in Half Moon Bay, probably soggy from the ride up CA 1 through Big Sur. Oh well, it is a British-inspired event and we wouldn't want the weather to be too nice, would we? Check back tonight.

By the way, weather for The Legend of the Motorcycle on Saturday is expected to be sunny.

The Second Annual Legend of the Motorcycle will be held at the Ritz in Half Moon Bay this Saturday. I'll be there to cover the astounding collection of collector motorcycles and of course the fascinating attendees of this premiere event. I've posted more than 200 photos I took Saturday on the CA 9 (Big Basin Way) hairpins east of Skyline Blvd. This location was suggested to me by one of the blog viewers. Turns out it was an excellent choice. Check out the photos for sale by clicking the link to the right. See some highlights below. I'll be shooting more at this location in the coming weeks. Check back to see my schedule. I'm going to try to set the schedule earlier in the week to give people a chance to plan. Sorry it's not a regular basis, but I'm doing this part time for now. Back on the Skyline

Well, I've taken a few weeks off, but got back to Skyline Boulevard this weekend. The great weather has brought out the bikes. I'll post more pictures after this weekend, but I've posted a few here. Evening Shadows

Here are some highlights of photos I took on Sunday, Dec. 3 on Skyline Boulevard in the Windy Hill area south of Alice's Restaurant. The days are getting short and the shadows long. Thankfully, we've had excellent weather with the highs in the low 60s and lots of sun. The rain has mostly stayed north of the Bay Area where they're getting record rain and snow falls. Next weekend looks to be gloomy but if the weather's nice on Sunday I may journey up the hill for more photos.

OK, I'm only a week late getting these pix up. I won't go into the details, but let us just say that anytime you put a new computer into service there're going to be problems. Here are some shots on the 5th that I took from a different vantage point. Some bikers ended up with strained necks, no doubt, as they tried to figure out what the guy with the long lens was doing up on the bank.

The days are getting short and the sun is low in the South, so finding spots on the Boulevard to shoot bikes is a challenge. I like this spot, even though it creates some nasty contrast challenges for pix of bikes heading north (see the photo above, for example). This is the Windy Hill area about three or four miles south of Alice's Restaurant where I'll most like be on days when I'm able to get up to the Boulevard this winter. If you were riding in this area between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 5 I may have gotten a shot of you. Check in my Photo Reflect storefront by clicking on the link on the top right of this blog.

Surf 'n' Turf
It was sunny and warm on the Boulevard Sunday, a great day to ride. Lots of bikes were about, including this surfer/biker dude who has the best of both worlds.

The late summer sun created a lot of new challenges, but also introduced some experimentation with the sun and shade.

If you're wondering about the quality of these photos, take a look at this enlargement I made of a small part of a photo I took Sunday. This has been reduced in resolution to 72 ppi to make it Web friendly. The actual photo is 150 ppi and is 3008x2000. OK, I don't get everyone this sharp due to a lot of things, like not panning properly, but my percentage is pretty good. I'm using one of the best lenses Nikon makes to shoot these.

This is a late notice, but thought I'd put it up anyway. I'll be on Skyline Boulevard taking pix tomorrow, Sunday Sept. 17. I'm planning a different strategy. I'll start off about 9:30 a.m. one mile south of Skyline's intersection with Calif. 92, which is the road to Half Moon Bay. There are a few nice sweeping curves there and if the light is right in the morning, maybe some decent photo weather. I will probably move on to Woodside Road just east of Alice's Restaurant somewhere around noon and call it off after 2 p.m. unless a lot of bikes are still moving around.

Got my bike back this weekend after two weeks of being stuck in Chico due to a busted a rear wheel so look for the red Harley Road King Classic. Ride up if you get a chance and check back late tomorrow afternoon to see if I shot your skooter.

I will not be shooting the 23rd or 24th due to an out of town trip. Check back on Sept. 29 to see if I'm going to make the Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 weekend.

The above picture sums up the way it was on Saturday on the Skyline. Time to break out the raingear, or at least the leathers. I dodged fog most of the day. First I went to Windy Hill. There's a reason it's called that. The fog was roiling up the sides of the mountains and a mist was blowing so thick that you couldn't see a bike more than 50 yards out. The trees were dripping like it was raining. Lousy photo weather. Then I went down La Honda Road and got a few shots. But I soon figured that most bikers weren't heading to the Coast with all that fog so I ended up on Skyline just about a mile south of CA 92, which is where I snapped the above photo. Meanwhile down in the valley two miles away the sun was shining bright. That's why we love this place.
